Okay, so Xiaomi's President Lu Weibing is out there flapping his gums about memory chip prices and how they're gonna squeeze smartphone vendors. Yeah, no kidding. You don't need to be Nostradamus to see that coming. What's interesting is the way he's framing it.
He's saying that memory prices hit rock bottom in 2023 and now we're in for a long-term surge. Fine. But then he pivots to how Xiaomi's been "climbing the smartphone value ladder," pushing premium models like the Mi 17 series to take on Apple’s iPhone 17. "Value ladder"? Give me a break. That's corporate-speak for "we're gonna charge you more and pretend it's for your own good."
It's always the same song and dance. Component prices go up, so ofcourse the cost gets passed down to the consumer. But let's be real: companies like Xiaomi aren't just eating the cost increase. They're using it as an excuse to pad their margins. And who pays the price? You guessed it.
Lu Weibing even had the audacity to say that some companies will "fall behind—or even exit the market." Oh, the humanity! Is that a threat, or a promise? I can't tell anymore.
Meanwhile, Samsung's sweating over the Galaxy S26 launch. Rising memory costs and a 25.5% jump in Qualcomm application processor expenses? Ouch. They're paying around 11 trillion won for APs, according to Maeil Business Newspaper. That's a lot of ramen.

The question is, will they eat the cost, or will they pass it on to us? And more importantly, will anyone actually notice the price increase? Let's be honest, these flagship phones are already priced in the stratosphere. What's another hundred bucks gonna do?
Trendforce is even lowering its 2026 global production forecasts for smartphones and notebooks. Smartphone output is projected to decrease by 2% YoY. Notebook production is expected to shrink by 2.4%. So, less stuff being made... does that mean the price will go up even higher? Here's what I see: Xiaomi's gonna keep pushing its "premium" phones, jacking up the prices and blaming it all on memory costs. Samsung will try to play it cool, but they'll eventually have to raise prices too. And Apple? They'll just keep doing what they always do, laughing all the way to the bank.
And then there's the whole AI angle. All this talk about AI-driven demand for HBM pushing global memory prices up... it all feels like a self-fulfilling prophecy. They create the demand, then they complain about the supply, then they raise the prices. It's a beautiful, cynical cycle. I mean, am i the only one seeing this?
I wonder what the redmi line of phones will look like after all this. Will they even be affordable anymore?
